Typewriters – An update

Here’s a happy problem – our supply of typewriters can’t seem to keep up with demand!

Apologies that I might not have updated the status of some of the typewriters on the blog, so here’s an update of the models we do have in the store now.

Below is my favourite  =) I had played with this when I was a kid (it’s my first typewriter!) but I have not seen this old friend again for ages.

Fortunately, I met it again after all these years. So this one’s not for sale =)

Isn't it adorable? My first typewriter!

That’s all folks (for now) as typewriters are increasingly hard to come by. Another happy problem – this means more people are keeping them in the family perhaps? =)

Not all typewriters are created equal – by that I mean each brand has their own distinctive font. We’ve seen only serif fonts so far (fonts with that little uptick at the end of the letter), but they could be more rounded (Olympia), or smaller (Olivetti Lettera 32), or even squarish (the Olivetti Dora we had earlier). Here are some examples, just for some fun comparison.

Other cool stuff

This cute plastic model is like your baby typewriter, waiting to grow up into a ‘serious’ heavyweight like the Olivetti. From the USA. It works too!

Comes with a baby blue case

Beat the heat with this working 1970s Pifco fan.

Simple and effective design

Here’s a clever design – this travel clock has a covering which sheaths it completely. Now you see it…

Now you (almost) don’t!

It stands up, but when the stand is folded back, it becomes an anonymous oval object.

New arrivals – typewriters

Catch these before they’re gone!

We love the baby blue keyboard of the Hermes Baby (no relation to the fashion brand). Made in West Germany, it was quite an iconic typewriter in its day. This model was made around 1966.

Hermes Baby (sold)

Another blue –  a dusky hue for the Hanimex, made in Japan, circa 1960s.

Hanimex Regal

Sophisticated brown Royal Litton typewriter, made in Japan also in the 60s.

The Olivetti Dora was designed by renowned Italian architect Ettore Sottsass (he also designed the chilli red Olivetti Valentine and founded the Memphis design movement – think geometric shapes and squiggly lines). Note the clean and simple, slightly boxy shape. The typeface, as we read, is Techno Pica, a similarly boxy font. Made in the 60s in Spain.

Finally, the most unusual of the lot with a woodgrain casing, another Royal Litton.
